Coaching or psychology
In the last decade we have experienced a great interest in the practices and techniques that promote the development and evolution of the individual. These emerge from those that are in relation to Buddhism and the full attention that is called mindfulness, till therapies related to verbal behavior such as Contextual. Even though without any doubt, the discipline that has emerged most strongly is coaching.
In this article, we discuss about the different visions that talk about the functioning of the mind with the purpose of choosing one professional over the other. You will see that the decision relies more on whom rather than on how.
The curiosity for the psyche and its components brought us a headache (never better said) for centuries. You find spiritual and mystical explanations –for that then– as it is the dualism between body and mind of Platon, or the distinction between the corporal substance where passions are born and the consciousness, where according to Descartes the intellect resides. All of them tried to separate and locate seemingly antagonistic mental processes.
With the empirical methodology, there has been given form to some content of psychological form. There appeared the idea that the unique answer to our knowledge resides in those measurable and quantifiable processes that we perceive and manage with our senses, those that W. Wundt has labeled as immediate consciousness. It was considered that all those weak and unclear ideas were deposited in a warehouse called “Unconscious”, a passive space that didn’t interact with none of the aspects of the consciousness according to the psychological psychology.
It was thanks to the studies of hypnosis of S. Freud that was given an active and inherent role to unconscious: a space where are kept or represented elements that undoubtedly determine our behavior. Even though his negative vision of this space is famous, later on authors such as W. James, A. Adler or C.G. Jung have understood the importance of the contents of unconscious for a stable and evolutionary development of the individual.
As we may see, there are concepts that start from the premise –and focus all their performance– on the fact that the only unique psychological aspects that can be worked on are just those quantitative and qualitative aspects of behavior. Therapies such as cognitive-behavioral, positive, contextual or also disciplines such as coaching that direct the mind of the person towards that future that starts from the present moment. They ask what, why and how, getting rid of why. Investigating or working in the consciousness to correct or create patterns of behavior that direct our energy is the consequence of the measurable objectives on short-term.
Regarding the investigation of the unconscious, there are disciplines such as psychoanalysis, evolutionary psychology and the psychology of the self. All of them create Depth Psychology. They try to access the unconscious to reveal those memories or experiences that in a certain manner are interfering in the scenario of present consciousness. Inevitably, they interfere in our behavior through episodes incongruent to the viewer that answer to the classic expression “what’s got into her/him?”
By analyzing the perception that we had from these sensations and past feelings and taking them to the field of consciousness, we may start building a positive manner. These unconsciousness processes will stop stealing cerebral energy, allowing the construction on a longer term of our future through the fixation and subsequent attainment of objectives –Our evolution.
In this way, having clear what you need, you only have to look for the tools –and therefore the professional– opportunities to reach your own progress and wellbeing.
In order to obtain progress, disciplines such as coaching may be the ally that gives you the best guarantees of your evolution. Although, before the wish for progress there are in yourself feelings of confusion, doubts, fears or even insecurities apparently irrational, perhaps there may be recommended to work your unconscious, as a process guided by a professional specialized in Depth Psychology.
